How I have grown over the past 6 weeks in AEDU 209

Coming into this class, I thought I had a good understanding of how technology was being integrated into education and how students were using it these days. I was way off the mark on this one. There are so many tools that are out there, so many innovative ways to get more technology into the classroom that I could ever things about. From all of the applications that you can use with Google, to actual hardware that is being used, this class has opened my eyes to that. I knew information about some of the Google tools like Docs, and Drive, but using many different extensions was awesome to see. Going through the Screencast (which in itself was very interesting to play with) and doing the review of an application helped me see how wide reaching these applications can really be for the classroom. Another tool that I really didn't think would be very applicable that we really dove into was Twitter. I had played around on Twitter in the past, but more for just...

Halloween and what we can be thankful for - Social Media Post

With the time on the season and Halloween is all over the place, pretty much all that I see all over Twitter, Facebook, and other social media mediums is all about Halloween. People in their costumes, pictures of their kids, pictures from parties that they are attending and all over the place. When seeing this and experiencing this, it makes me think about how gifted many of us are with what we have been given and experiences throughout our lives. There are many out there, maybe within our own neighborhoods that are not able to possibly afford a costume, or have a parent to go out trick or treating with and miss out on a lot of what a kid could experience. While I am talking specifically about this season, this applies to education as well and what some students are able to get access to, and what others are not able to. When we think about the schools and what students have access to, it can be hard to think about depending on what you are surrounded by. There are plenty of schools ...

Flipped learning and me

Throughout my schooling, I was never the best student. I always struggled to keep focus on my tasks and take care of my work in a timely manner. Looking back, I feel that I was more of a lazy student and didn't apply myself the way I should of. With that, I feel that flipped learning would have been a train wreck for me. With flipped learning and the fact that you would be doing the legwork while you are at home, I feel that I would have pushed off the work or wait until the last minute to actually do the work. I feel this would have cost me comprehension and I would fall behind in class fast. I would come into the classroom and be poorly prepared and feel lost. I needed to be kept on task and making sure that the teachers are going through the information in the class and making sure that we reviewed as well. On top of that, being able to work with classmates and review the information that is given would be a big benefit for me. With the movement of flipped learning, I am gla...

How can we work technology into physical education?

As I spoke about in my previous post, technology is here to stay within education. There are many great ways to work it into the classroom and integrate it into lesson plans. While this should be easy enough to use within math, science, english, and other core subjects, how could we work this into physical education?   Being based around sports and fitness and taking place either within gyms or outside, it is harder to see how technology is going to fit into the subject. But there are plenty, and creative ways to work technology into physical education. You could say that physical education has become a bit stale within their lesson plans and curriculum that has been put together. With technology playing a bigger role in education now, physical education should adapt and work technology into it's day to day.So the question is how should this be done?  One good method to use is applications through tablets for different sports. Using an application like Coaches Eye, you ...

How is technology affecting education?

From tablets, to smart phones and computers, technology is all around us these days. As you are walking down the street, you will witness many people with phones in their hands, looking at reviews, taking pictures, and glued to their screens. Even while I am writing this, my wife and son are playing a game on a tablet to pass some time. Technology has become part of our everyday, and it has made it's way into the schools as well. While it has plenty of good applications, there are some downfalls that it causes as well. Technology is playing a huge role in education these days. One instance that stands out to me is special education teachers using tablets with students that do not the ability to speak using tablets. The students are able to tap pictures to say the words, or put together full sentence and the tablets are able to say the sentences for the students. Another situation that comes to light is students using tablets to identify constellations. The students were able to...
